built for a change – ELWA P2H

In order to achieve the energy transition, surplus electricity must no longer be left unused.

In the future, it must no longer be the case that electrical power from renewable energy sources is regulated (curtailment) due to grid overload or that a CHP unit is operated inefficiently because only the heat is needed. With a Power-To-Heat system from ELWA, these problems are a thing of the past.

The primary goal is to avoid deregulation. Because only through consistent decarbonization can we slow down climate change. ELWA P2H systems can convert electrical surpluses into heat on a second-by-second basis, thus relieving the energy supply network. Their variable control means that expansion measures can be avoided.

Because our systems react extremely quickly, they can be used for both primary and secondary control power – without any restriction in the power range. To make operation as convenient as possible, we have put a lot of know-how into intelligent control. Our plants are compatible with any other system and can be maintained remotely by our technicians. So that everything runs smoothly.

P2H makes your energy supply more efficient.

Let’s start with a few sample projects

P2H MLB 4.7 MW

P2H MLB 4.7 MW Power

Modular system consisting of three units with a total capacity of 4.7 MW. This plant is integrated into a concept with a battery system and a large thermal storage.

The municipality of Fuchstal operates its own wind farm and uses this
system to stores excess electricity in the battery bank or, via the ELWA P2H system, in the thermal storage, from which the local district heating network can be served.

Thus, shutdowns of the wind power plants can be avoided.

P2H MLB 5.0 MW

P2H MLB 5 MW Power

This plant supplies a district in Hamburg with district heating from surplus energy. Instead of shutting down wind turbines, this plant converts surplus electricity into heat during periods of low residual load as a perfect example of sensible sector coupling.

P2H MLB 22 MW

P2H 22 MW Power

As an example of the almost arbitrary scalability of our modular P2H system, this plant with two 11 MW units serves as a counterload for highly dynamic load curves of gas turbines. The generated heat is fed into the building grid. With this system, we can also upgrade large power plants with gas engines to iKWK plants.

Power outputs in the three-digit megawatt range can also be achieved without any problems.

Our P2H systems for your projects

The earlier we are involved in the planning, the better the later integration succeeds. In P2H plants, high currents are usually switched. An optimized design of the plant from the transformer to the switchgear offers enormous cost reduction potential. This starts with the selection of the operating voltage and continues through the low-voltage main distribution, the P2H switchgear and the heaters to the individual heating element. Efficiency is not only required in operation but also in planning.

We are happy to support you and offer you all components from the transformer to the P2H system from a single source and perfectly integrated.

As an important component of an iKWK system, the P2H system must have measuring equipment that conforms to calibration law and must be integrated into a common control and regulation technology. ELWA P2H systems measure the current consumed with equipment that conforms to calibration law and adjust the output within fractions of a second. Integration into higher-level control systems is possible without any problems. The control system specially designed for this application ensures complete processing of all tasks including the safety chain within the P2H system. Only the necessary signals are exchanged. At the same time, any values can be made available via the network interface if they are required for visualizations, for example.

With a P2H plant, the operating point of a gas CHP can be shifted very flexibly. In case of need up to 100% heat.

Due to the very low latency of our plants during power control, the plants are technically suitable for both secondary and primary control power. For use as control power, a prequalification of the plant must be carried out. Since the systems monitor themselves and also send timely messages on recommended maintenance work, handling in the Redispatch 2.0 environment is facilitated.

The more sources of renewable energy participate in the grid, the more frequently curtailment occurs to avoid overload. This wastage can be effectively avoided by using a P2H system. Ideally, the P2H system is sized for the fast peaks and high loads, while a battery system operates in the lower range. The smart combination of different technologies opens up whole new possibilities to increase efficiency.

ELWA P2H systems can make optimal use of their advantages of high precision and speed in the sector coupling of electricity and heat.

ELWA P2H systems have been specifically designed to reduce installation effort and commissioning times to a minimum. This is particularly true of our modular MLB system, in which the switchgear and heater are delivered as a ready-to-use unit on a common frame. For larger plants, we install several systems connected in series and supply the appropriate piping at the same time.
As a rule, commissioning is limited to establishing communication between the P2H subsystems and the higher-level control system.

ELWA P2H systems are designed for low maintenance. Elements that are subject to unavoidable wear are monitored and maintenance instructions are issued at an early stage. This includes both the contactors and their contacts as well as the heating elements.

When heating elements reach the end of their service life, the affected elements can be replaced individually. This saves costs and reduces the maintenance time considerably.

We always equip larger plants with remote access routers. After approval by the operator, we can then connect to evaluate error logs and provide important information on necessary maintenance work.

We offer maintenance contracts for systems in the DACH region.

The maximum power in a single heater is currently 1 MW at 400 VAC and 1.68 MW at 690 VAC. For higher powers, several heaters connected in series are used. The total power of the system is theoretically not limited. With our modular system MLB, we can reasonably cover outputs up to the high 2-digit MW range. With the modular system, the heater and switchgear are delivered ready for operation on a common modular frame. This considerably reduces on-site expenses.
